CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Jason Arnie Owens helped carry his father’s casket to the hearse, then turned to embrace a relative. He never made it to the cemetery.

As mourners gathered outside a northern West Virginia funeral home on Aug. 24, two plainclothes officers with a fugitive warrant swooped in from separate vehicles, called Owens' name and shot him dead, spattering his 18-year-old son's shirt with blood as horrified loved ones looked.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts said he’s concerned criticism of the Supreme Court over controversial decisions has veered into attacks on its legitimacy as an institution.

Greece's prime minister says the European Union should have a coordinated response to the challenge posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “blackmail” with the supply of natural gas. Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Saturday that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is meant to "legitimize a despotic authoritarianism and enable any local troublemaker” to do the same. That was a hardly veiled reference to Greece's neighbor Turkey and the increasingly aggressive rhetoric of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The comments came as the Greek premier announced the government's economic policies for the coming year, including a series of handouts and tax cuts aimed at helping households cope with the energy crisis and high inflation.

Jeff German’s articles exposed alleged bullying and favoritism within government in Clark County, Nevada, and as he had expected, they had immediate impact.

LAS VEGAS — Murder suspect Robert Telles may lose his law license, following his arrest in the slaying of longtime Las Vegas investigative journalist Jeff German.

Noah Gragson outran the rain and Justin Allgaier to win the rain-shortened NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday at Kansas Speedway. Gragson survived a two-lap shootout to win the second stage, after which the race was considered official. He used a great restart after the race’s first caution to assume the lead and held the advantage when rain caused the caution flags to come out with eight laps left in the stage. After some back-and-forth, NASCAR called the race official. Gragson won for the 10th time in the series, fifth time this season and second straight week after a dramatic victory at Darlington. Allgaier finished second, followed by points leader Ty Gibbs. The Xfinity Series regular season will conclude next week at Bristol.

Perhaps the strangest part of Kyle Busch’s present contract situation, which remains up in the air heading into Kansas Speedway, may not be the fact that the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion doesn’t have a ride for next season. It might be that he could very well win a third. Busch is eight points to the good side of the cut line heading into Sunday’s second race in the round of 16, despite blowing his engine with 22 laps remaining in last week’s opener at Darlington. And now that he’s heading to what has fast become one of his better tracks, the chances of advancing for Joe Gibbs Racing are quite good.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane Earl is nearing its last stages as a tropical system, but strong swells are a threat to Florida’s East Coast.

An emotional Harrison Ford has unveiled a trailer for the fifth Indiana Jones film, saying this one will be his last. Ford and castmate Phoebe Waller-Bridge appeared on stage at Disney's D23 Expo after an arena-sized audience in Anaheim watched the trailer. Ford choked up as he called making the film an “incredible experience” and said “this one is fantastic.” He also said “this is it, I will not fall down for you again." Cast members of ”Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" showed footage from the new film. The scene acknowledges the death of Chadwick Boseman's character T'Challa. Boseman died of prostate cancer in 2020.

The Republican nominee for Kansas governor is trying to make the Democratic incumbent's support for abortion rights a liability. GOP nominee and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt pursued that tactic Saturday during a debate at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson despite last month's strong statewide vote affirming abortion rights. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has been a strong supporter of abortion rights. Voters last month rejected a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution that Schmidt supported. But he suggested Kelly is out of step with Kansas voters and supports abortion on demand. She said, “He's making that up.”

LAS VEGAS — The Raiders and tight end Darren Waller agreed to terms on a contract extension on Saturday. Doing so means the club now has its key players under contract for the foreseeable future.

ROME — The winners of Italy’s Sept. 25 election will take charge of an economy still warm from a summer boom, but with darkening prospects.

Mick Schumacher could have just a few races to save his Formula One career. The son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher was promoted to Haas from the Ferrari Driver Academy. But his contract at the academy is set to expire at the end of the year and Haas will then have no obligation to keep the 23-year-old German.  Schumacher has spent two seasons with Haas but only scored his first points at this year’s British Grand Prix in July with an eighth-place finish. Ferrari team principal Matteo Binotti says they will sit down with Schumacher and Haas “in a few races” to discuss his future.

Authorities in New Mexico found an alligator and large quantities of drugs, guns and money at two homes in Albuquerque last month, but they're still searching for a young tiger they think is being being illegally kept as a pet. State Department of Game and Fish officers said in a statement Saturday that investigators think the tiger is somewhere in New Mexico or a nearby state and poses a clear danger to the public. The animal is believed to be less than 1 year old and 60 pounds, but tigers can grow to 600 pounds. Officials say the alligator was taken to a wildlife facility after the Aug. 12 search, and a 26-year-old man was arrested.

Daytime TV is is going through a “re-rack,” as one executive put it. There's been a mass exit of shows, including those hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, Wendy Williams and Maury Povich. That's created opening for newcomers Jennifer Hudson, Sherri Shepherd and Karamo Brown. Their shows debut this month in syndication, facing competitors including Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall. Success with daytime’s female-skewing audience isn’t guaranteed, no matter a contender’s resume or fame. One marketing analyst says it takes an “every-person appeal” to succeed in daytime TV. The producers behind the Shepherd and Hudson shows say they're confident their respective hosts have the right touch.

Barcelona’s game at Cádiz was temporarily halted in the final minutes due to a health emergency involving a fan. Local media reported that a man had suffered a heart-related problem at the Spanish league game on Saturday. Cádiz goalkeeper Jeremías Ledesma helped give medical equipment to Red Cross medics while Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo prayed in the silent Nuevo Mirandilla stadium in southern Spain. The fan was eventually removed from the stadium on a stretcher. Local media said that the man was alive and taken to the local hospital. The game resumed after more than a half-hour stoppage. Barcelona went on to win 4-0.

A horse bred by Queen Elizabeth II has won a race at Pimlico two days after the British monarch died following seven decades on the throne. West Newton, a 6-year-old gelding, rallied from sixth place to win by a half-length Saturday at the track in Baltimore. He ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:52.12 in the $36,000 race. The gelding was ridden by Forest Boyce and trained by Richard Hendriks. West Newton's mare, called Queen's Prize, also was bred by the queen. She died Thursday at age 96.

Sam Hartman passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 23 Wake Forest beat Vanderbilt 45-25. Hartman connected on 18 of 27 passes after he missed Wake Forest’s opener against VMI because of a blood clot. The fifth-year quarterback directed the Demon Deacons to 11 wins and a trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game last season. Hartman’s 68-yard touchdown pass to A.T. Perry lifted Wake Forest to a 14-3 lead with 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Drake Maye passed for two touchdowns, Omarion Hampton ran for a pair of scores and North Carolina escaped another upset bid from a Sun Belt Conference team. The Tar Heels rallied for a 35-28 victory over Georgia State after squandering an 18-point lead. The 3-0 Tar Heels were coming off a wild 63-61 victory at Appalachian State despite giving up a staggering 40 points in the fourth quarter. Georgia State ripped off 25 straight points to grab a 28-21 lead late in the third quarter. But UNC pulled out the win despite three TD passes from Georgia State's Darren Grainger.
