It takes more money than most think to be considered middle class in New York and neighboring states.

To be considered middle class the Pew Research Center believes middle-income households are homes with incomes that are two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income.

Cost of living and average income varies from state to state across the nation. GOBankingRates recently analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2018 American Community Survey to figure out how much money you must make to be considered middle-class in each state.

Below is how much a two-person family, three-person family and four-person family need to make to be considered middle class in the Empire State, according to Go Banking Rates. For fun, we also added the middle-class totals for some neighboring states or states many New Yorkers move to.
